Yuletide

The fall blooming camellias have been spectacular this year. They are in heavy bloom and the cooler than normal temperatures have helped them hold their blooms. Some plants have common names that just seem to fit and one such flower is Yuletide.  Just looking at it and you can feel the Christmas season. It is the one fall blooming camellias to have if you have room for only one--but if you have one you'll want more.  Last year both of mine were sparse in bloom but this year they are better but still not a big flush. This is Yuletide--single bloom and bush.

At this time of the garden year there is not a lot blooming except for camellias. They are center stage not just for a week but for 6-8 weeks. Here are some unknown individual blooms that I took yesterday and one of a bush in full bloom. When I looked up from gardening chores this week, I'd spend a quiet moment enjoying the sight.

This last camellia I'm trying to espalier on the wall by the front door. I have visions of a wall of color some day.

  1. All my Camellias are about 2 or 3 feet tall, so I too have visions of large full shrubs in the future.

  2. When I mention how much I like Yuletide, sometimes other gardeners have given me a slight sneer, but I think it is my favorite sasanqua.
